The first announcement for Sea Star Festival in mid-December quickly became late 2016’s biggest music news in Croatia and the region, and Exit Festival’s coming to Croatia even drew the attention of international music media outlets like Billboard, IQ and Resident Advisor. A leading electronic music magazine has said that the addition of festivals on the coast in Croatia and Montenegro makes EXIT “more than a festival, a movement, a brand... EXIT is a culture in and of itself.” One of Europe’s most highly rated festivals has finally arrived as Sea Star Festival, which will be held on 26 and 27 May at Stella Maris Resort in Umag, in a beautiful bay with one of the best pebble beaches in Istria.
This tsunami of a festival, which announced the arrival of The Prodigy, Dubioza Kolektiv, and Urban&4 in mid-December, is now being joined by a new, even bigger wave of artists headed by leading international stars of the electronic music scene and regional heroes. The winner of a Grammy, three BRIT awards and 10 MTV awards, legendary showman Fatboy Slim will be coming back to Stella Maris exactly seven years from his first, legendary performance here! Fatboy will be coming to Sea Star as one of the headliners of top international festivals like Glastonbury, Tomorrowland, and, of course, EXIT. The array of headliners will be joined by Paul Kalkbrenner, leading figure in the German and international electro scene, whose stadium spectacles draw audiences that number in the tens of thousands. One of his most recent performances entered the annals of history when he performed at a ceremony celebrating 25 years since the fall of the Berlin wall in front of an audience of half a million people, setting a record that even today’s biggest bands will find hard to break for years to come. Celebrated dubstep-rock group Modestep will be coming from London to Sea Star for their first performance in the region in their full live format, while the furious quartet of new headliners will be rounded off with legendary Australian bass rock band Pendulum in their special DJ edition, which has been the soundtrack to some of the biggest EXIT parties in history! Performances by some of the region’s most sought-after acts have also been announced – Elemental, Bad Copy, Brkovi, Artan Lili, Jonathan, High5 & Kukus, Kiša metaka, Krankšvester, Matter and Sassja!
The true spirit of Exit is coming to the Croatian coast!
The most important characteristic of Sea Star Festival will be its combination of the spirit of Exit’s favourite stages with Istria’s unique, coastal vibe. It has already been announced that Sea Star will have six stages, dominated by the Tesla Main Stage and Nautilus Arena, and the programme will be headed by acts whose performances have been some of the best in Exit’s history. The figure of Tesla originally appeared as a motif and inspiration at one of the first Exit festivals, which featured a working Tesla coil, and the Main Tesla Stage at Exit 2013 was the venue for a mythical performance by The Prodigy. Sea Star’s Tesla Stage on the first day of the festival will channel the spirit of Exit’s stage, and will once again host a performance by The Prodigy!
The hard-hitting Essex band has a special chemistry with EXIT’s audience. Well-known DJ Mag wrote that they had “never witnessed a crazier atmosphere and audience in all the years of their existence”, and recommended everyone to watch them live at Exit, a piece of advice that surely holds for all other events put on by the Exit team. The same evening as The Prodigy, leading regional acts Dubioza Kolektiv and festival hosts Urban&4 will also be performing.
On the second evening, Sea Star Festival’s main stage will host one of the most popular electronic stages in the world – the infamous EXIT Dance Arena, which Mixmag described as follows: “In the past 15 or more years of our existence, we’ve never found a better Dance Arena, and believe us, we’ve looked.” DJ Mag added: “it’s the best scene you’ll ever see at an electronic music event”. In addition to a great atmosphere, the Dance Arena in Istria on 27 May will play host to some of the biggest stars, whose names will be announced soon.
Nautilus Arena, located within the main ATP stadium, will hold two more super popular EXIT stages – the Fusion stage and the No Sleep stage. One evening will be dedicated to indie bands, while the second will feature alternative electronic music.
The rest of the festival will bring the magical atmosphere of the Petrovaradin fortress to Istria with three more of EXIT’s favourite stages, unmissable parts of its spirit and appeal. The Zion Beats, Exotic Laguna, and Silent Octopus stages will bring a variety of genres ranging from hip-hop, reggae and Latino to bass, house and techno. The sixth stage, called Cinema, will feature a huge screen that will show both excellent films and Exit Festival’s best performances in high resolution.
Sea Star formula: 2+2 = day and night!
The festival’s “2+2” formula is already well-known – in addition to the two main days, audiences will enjoy a warm up party on 25 May, while Sunday, 28 May is reserved for the after party! Sea Star will begin with its daily programme at noon with parties around the pebble beach in the lagoon, while the evening programme will see every stage lit up and rocking until the early morning hours. Many confirmed acts will be announced in the first half of February, and by the end of the month the entire programme will be released. In addition to the eclectic musical set-up, visitors will also be treated to the rich FoodLand food court, as well as a chill and activity zone. A new, innovative cashless festival payment system will also be presented soon.
