Zlatni Lav Festival

In 1820 Antonio Coslovich was building the Al Leon d'oro Hotel when a decision was made. It was a decision that would have an impact on the culture of Istria for centuries. Within the construction of the hotel, Coslovich included a theatre. It was the first of its kind in the region. Widely considered the first example of cultural tourism in Istria, the theatre's importance to the area is undeniable.

The theatrical spirit is still alive today in Umag. And arguably the most popular production in the region comes back to Umag this summer. The 12th International Chamber Theatre Festival "Zlatni Lav" will be held July 1-10. The "Zlatni Lav" – or Golden Lion – festival is a contemporary theatre extravaganza based upon a theme within the Istrian culture.
Theatre groups from Istria, Zagreb, Slovenia, Italy, Serbia and Macedonia will bring their talented actors to Umag with hopes that their play will be crowned winner of the Grand Prix contest, which will be decided by a panel of judges. The winning troupe will receive the Golden Lion crystal statue.
The Zlatni Lav Festival has been a wonderful success and has defined Umag and Istria as a top tourist destination in the world of art and culture.
