Through the centuries, Umag spent periods under Venetian, French and Italian rule – among others – before becoming part of the Republic of Croatia in 1954. In 1993, Umag became an independent municipality and was awarded the status of a town in 1997.
Umag's buildings from its earliest stages – the Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages – have been mostly destroyed due to its turbulent past. Despite this, the city has maintained its historical significance, as remnants still exist to provide a reminder of what it was in its original form.
Centuries-old architecture can still be seen in the city's many churches and distinctive narrow streets, staples of traditional Istrian style.
