Since 1990, the top tennis players in the world have come to the clay courts of Umag, hoping to outlast the competition and raise the winner's trophy. The 2012 winner was Marin Čilić. In the final of the 23rd Tournament, he beat the Spaniard Marcel Granollers, 6:4, 6:2.
Last year’s Umag ATP Vegeta Croatia Open attracted more than 80,000 visitors, whilst for the final alone 15,000 people crowded into the Stella Maris Tennis Centre.
It is precisely the large crowds and the many other attractions that won the Tournament the Best Fan Experience Prize, awarded by the international tennis organization, the ATP.
Umag becomes an electric city during the Croatia Open. It brings thousands of tennis fans, including famous celebrities, each summer. But it is not just the world-class tennis that keeps them coming. The week is also highlighted by the Istria Gourmet Festival and Miss Hostess contest, as well as featured DJs and live music every night. It all creates an exciting, memorable atmosphere.
Stella Maris is the ideal spot for the tournament. The ATP stadium is located directly on the beach, so between matches you can take the children for a swim and bask in the sun. The stadium is also within walking distance to a number of Istraturist area hotels and Umag city centre.
Tennis, music, dancing and eating – there is something for everybody at the ATP Croatia Open, which has helped Umag become of a top sport city in Istria and an unforgettable tourist destination.
